Meet our Team: One Monday per month we will introduce you to one of our Studio B Yoga & More team members. Each segment will consist of a few questions and our team members’ answers. We are so proud of our team and so blessed to work with such wonderful people. Our intention with this project is to share insight into what lights the heart of each amazing Studio B teacher and team member.
Please tell us a bit about yourself, Char: I am a full time psychology & philosophy student at the University of the Fraser Valley. The majority of my day is spent in coffee shops with strong coffee and a strong WiFi connection. When I’m not working on homework I can be found trying out new restaurants with my friends, camping with my husband and our dog, or browsing the stacks of a bookstore.
Why we love her: Charlene is the most caring, kind hearted, enthusiastic individual around. She radiates joy and is so incredibly hard working and strives towards achieving her goals all while still taking the time and helping those around her with her giving and compassionate spirit. She always knows just the right thing to say whether it be when you need a laugh or to talk about life. She is sweet, and loving… and even a little gangster and that’s why we love having her as part of the team.
Why Yoga? I choose to practice yoga because it challenges me physically and mental. When I find myself in a pose that is challenging I have to rely on my breath and my mind to guide me through it. This has been helpful in other aspects of my life, too— mainly at school. Whenever I find myself feeling overwhelmed within the academia world I remind myself to take a step back and breathe. Sometimes I get so immersed in my schoolwork that I forget my body and my mind have other needs. Taking a step back and spending time with my breath allows me to refocus, and truly see what my mind and body are telling me. The message they send me is usually “GO TO A YOGA CLASS! or EAT!”
What is alive for you right now? Waking up every morning knowing that I get to go to school and expand my knowledge on topics I love.
What are you listening to right now? Currently I am listing to a lot of hip-hop. For me its the perfect genre for all occasions because it can be up-beat or mellow. I play hip-hop while cleaning, cooking, driving, getting ready in the morning and doing yoga! I am all about the hip-hop playlists on Spotify. There is always one to suit my mood.
If you could be any age at all, what age would you be? Part of me would like to be 18 again— but only if it meant that I could bring with me the knowledge and experience I have today. If I could relive my late teens and early 20’s again I would spend less time worrying about what people thought of me and more time trying to figure out where I needed to be in 5 years. I would have spent more time doing the things that made me happy regardless of what people thought.
Where’s your favourite place in the world to be? My favourite place in the world is the airport! Usually when I’m at the airport it means I’m going somewhere new and adventure awaits. I love to travel and try to do it as often as I can.
Do you have any interesting hobbies (all hobbies are interesting)? I love to read! My “to be read” list is out of control! I also enjoy camping in the summer, off-roading, and taking day trips to Vancouver in search of the best donuts and beer.
When you’re not working in the studio, where can you be found? In a coffee shop, head down, with my headphones on, OR In the summer time, lazying in the sun reading a book and listening to music.
How did you find yoga? In high-school; it was part of my health and fitness class. I quickly fell in love with yoga when I found out that I got to take a “nap” for 10 minutes at the end of each class.
What’s your idea of adventure? Going to a country where most people don’t speak English, and the culture is different than my own. Exploring a new country is always fun, but I think my next big adventure needs to be exploring my own country. I would love to spend a month or two driving across Canada and camping along the way.
What is your favourite thing about working at Studio B? My favourite thing about working at Studio B is the people. Each person has a unique journey that has led them to their practice (yoga) and I think one of my favourite things about Studio B is that it’s created such a safe and calm environment and as a result people are more willing to open up and talk about their journey with me. I really love that yoga brings such a diverse group of people together, and for 75 – 90 minutes all their journeys intercept with one another.
